APARTMENTS SIZES IN MANHATTAN
STUDIO - A one-room apartment, combining living area, bedroom and kitchen into a single space. The bathroom is a separate room, and can come with a bath tub or with only a shower.
ALCOVE STUDIO - Often referred to as an "L-shaped" studio. This is a studio apartment, that has an alcove off the main room. The alcove is usually used as a bedroom, and allows the tenant to separate their bed away from the main living-room area, often by utilizing a shoji screen, bookcases, or curtains.
JUNIOR 1 - Similar to Alcove Studio, where alcove can be walled off to create a bedroom. This additional room is usually quite small and might not even have a window.
1 BEDROOM - A one bedroom apartment includes a real bedroom with a closet and a door, a separate living room, a bathroom (larger 1 bedroom apartments in luxury buildings might have an additional half-bath), and a kitchen.
JUNIOR-4 - An apartment with a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a dining area. The fourth room (dining area), originally part of the living-room, can sometimes be converted into a 2nd bedroom by installing a pressure wall with a door. JR4 usually has 1.5 or 2 bathrooms
CONVERTIBLE 2-BEDROOMS (FLEX 2) — This is a one-bedroom apartment similar to Junior-4, often a corner unit, that features a bedroom, a living room, a kitchen, and a dining area. The fourth room (dining area), originally part of the living-room, can be easily converted into a 2nd bedroom by installing a pressure wall with a door.
2 BEDROOM APARTMENT -Probably the most desirable of all apartment layouts, because of the additional square footage, and for the flexibility it affords all manner of apartment living. A true two-bedroom apartment has 4 rooms and must have a two separate bedrooms, each with at least one window and a door that closes.
CONVERTIBLE 3 BEDROOM (FLEX 3) - A two-bedroom apartment with an alcove in the living room that is convertible to 3rd bedroom.
CLASSIC 6 - A Classic 6 apartment consists of a 6 rooms: living room, a formal dining room, two full bedrooms, a separate kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a third, smaller bedroom, still today referred to as a "maid's room," located off the kitchen. Maid's room can have a full or half bath of it's own. Classic 6 Apartment can be found only in prewar buildings in New York, mostly co-ops.
3 BEDROOM APARTMENT(AND LARGER)- THREE, FOUR, FIVE, OR SIX BEDROOM apartments are similar to a two bedroom apartment, with the difference being additional bedrooms.
